Mae Salong’s early history centred on the the opium trade of the Golden Triangle. Today, Doi Mae Salong has become one of the main tourist attractions in Chiang Rai, offering the succulent native Chinese cuisine, lovely houses with flowers and many plantations from fruits to coffee and tea while there are still many tribes living there.
Visit Akha Hill Tribe; the most beautiful women’s head wares, decorated with assorted coins, shells, beats feathers and animals. They are originated from China. Explore the villages that are very simple, unique costumes, their own tradition and dialect.
Visit to Yao Hill tribe Village who originate in southern China, and are the only hill tribe to have a written language and their houses built usually of wooden planks on a dirt road.
Continue to Santi Kiri Village, with its tea & coffee plantations and also co-op store where home made wines, medical herbs and other locally grown products are sold. The villagers are ethnic Yunan Chinese, descendents of KMT (Kuo Min Tung) Nationalist Chinese army regiment that took refuge in Thailand almost 50 years ago when Communist Forces won the civil war in mainland China.
The trip continues to Mae Sai, the Thailand-Myanmar border which is also the northernmost point of Thailand. Enjoy shopping local products from China and Myanmar.
